Official 2014 Ram 1500 MPG rating = 28 MPG

The EPA has put out its official rating for the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. And the big number is... 28 MPG on the highway.

That's right. The Ram's 3.0L V6 EcoDiesel gets 28 MPG on the highway, 20 MPG in the city, and about 23 MPG in mixed driving.

All three measures of fuel economy for the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel put it at the top of its class for fuel economy. 6 MPG better than the best F150 EcoBoost engine.

If you include the 25 MPG 3.6L V6 1500 model, Ram now holds the top two efficiency spots in the full size truck segment.

Overall those are great numbers, but as always as you might have seen me mention before, real world numbers are where its at for me.

I've loved the idea of this truck since Ram first started talking about the EcoDiesel V6. I was hoping for a bit better all around mpg, but now I look back at it, that was a large amount to ask. It's already significantly better than any other truck on the market. I want it. Gotta start saving!

With tow loads are another key thing. At least with the numbers people post we'll get a good idea of what we can expect. I think Ram should be doing this, giving us this info in detail.

Will the high torque at low RPMs mean that the fuel economy will be good even with the bed full?

having low end torque is good for towing but that doesnt mean you wont loose mileage when doing so. it'll be just as bad.

You will lose mileage but it WON'T be "just as bad" as the loss seen in gasoline engines. Diesel engines don't have as wide a swing in numbers as the gas engines do

True, but real world numbers on diesel engines are much closer to the ratings because they don't have such wide swings at gas engines do.


We all know when looking at EPA MPG numbers that "Your mileage may vary". And in the real world, you will not be able to bank on getting 28MPG all the time with the ecoDiesel. But you can bank on getting consistently BETTER MPG than you would be getting with a gas engine. And most likely, the real world numbers will be more impressive because even though the Ford ecoBoost supposedly gets 22MPG, nobody I know gets close to it. They all seem to run around 13-18. On the other hand I truly believe that many ecoDIESEL owners will run within the 20-25 MPG range.

that is true.
i think we could even expect to see the MPG's be where they are right from the start or even stabilize much sooner than petrol engines. Got to love diesels!

Another cool thing with diesels is their MPG typically gets better and better as you put more miles on the engine.
