As part of their punishment for mishandling 23 separate recalls, FCA has announced that they are prepared to buy back a portion of the 578,000 FCA pickups and SUVs that it failed to fix.

“Today’s action holds Fiat Chrysler accountable for its past failures, pushes them to get unsafe vehicles repaired or off the roads and takes concrete steps to keep Americans safer going forward,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said Sunday. “This civil penalty puts manufacturers on notice that the department will act when they do not take their obligations to repair safety defects seriously.”

The Detroit News reports that FCA will buy back certain vehicles after certain owners have waited more then 18 months for a fix. Vehicles eligible for recall must still be unrepaired. FCA says that work has been completed on more then 60% of the 578,000 vehicles.

To put the recall cost for you in perspective, the value of the recall is equal to about as much as the FCAs reported $101 million in the first three months of the year.

Vehicles Eligible Include

  • 2008–2012 Dodge/Ram 1500 pickups (265,000 vehicles)
  • 2008–2012 Dodge/Ram 45oo and 5500 heavy-duty pickups (35,942 vehicles)
  • 2009–2011 Dodge Dakota
  • 2009 Dodge Durango
  • 2009 Chrysler Aspen
