Ford F-150 vs Ram Ecodiesel in towing drag race

Now the first thing that I would like to say is that this video is made by Ford, so we need to take it with a grain of salt. The video shows the Ford F-150 drag racing a Ram Ecodiesel, and later a Chevy Silverado. Each of the trucks are towing 7,000 lbs behind them.

The Ford F-150 wins each race, but I also wonder if the speed that the truck can pull 7,000 lbs is really the measure of success here. As long as it pulls effectively, maybe a drag race and acceleration isn't the best measure of a great truck.

I don't doubt that the F-150 can and will out drag the others in a tow off, but as well all know thats not really the important metric when towing. Its all about economy. Because what they didn't tell you was that the Ford used half a tank of gas ;)
Exactly.

Why do I care how fast I can drag race a trailer?

I bet the Ecodiesel used far less fuel to get the same distance, even if it did it slower.
The better test would have included a get up to highway speed run, set cruise control, see who losses speed and uses the most fuel. Ford has a great advertising and marketing firm though who knows how to develop tests which favor their vehicles...especially the F series as it is their money maker ("fully boxed frame" BS).

The 3.92 gears in the Eco Diesel would make it much faster. They probably tested the lower gear ratio.
I don't tow that heavy ever but wouldn't a heavier truck be more stable? I do understand what they are trying to do. All mfrs do this regardless of the industry. It would have been interesting to see the MPG too.
Torque curve on the ED has a nice flat spot like with the Cummins:

L 630 DOHC: motors engine Emission Standards: United States - VM Motori

Anyone that tows knows this is what counts most.
The ED they claim in the video was a 3.92 one. These trucks hold speed really we'll, but from 55-70 MPH they can be real dogs. It is a good market ploy by Ford.
I have to admit though that the face on the new F150 is awesome, i love it. Overall I always liked how Ford Trucks and Cargo Vans have looked.

That is probably true, but I think that the main issue is the classification of the two trucks. The Ford heavy duty truck is technically in a different class than the Ram. So it might be more stable and able to tow more, but its technically in a different class (its also the only one in that class).
