I think you have to check it and drain it more often than changing it. It's in the manual - I just read about it a couple of days ago.

When is it required to replace the fuel filter, and what is the actual cost to do that?
My manual says 30,000 miles or three years for a fuel filter change, or if you get the "water in fuel" indicator light on the dash before that.

Fuel filter change at 16,000

Hey all, wanted to give some insight on my fuel filter change. I thought 30,000 miles was a little long for any type of filter so I decided to go ahead and change it. I am glad I did. It was black. There wasn't anything odd floating around in the cup but it was clearly a little rough. I am far from a diesel expert being this is my first one but for 30$ and 20 minutes of my time, it was worth it. I was noticing my fuel mileage was starting to drop a bit. 22-23 on the highway seemed to be a little low from last fall. Is there anything else I should check? Air filter is clean, tires are properly inflated...my driving is mostly highway. I do have a fiberglass cap on it so I guess that's not helping. Let me know your thoughts...thanks!

Great feedback on the fuel filter. How many miles did you have on your truck when you changed it.

On the mileage, there's a little trick I use. If I get on the highway and set the cruise, sometimes it will stay in a lower gear. If I let up off the accelerator for a second it will shift into 8th, then I set the cruise and it will stay there all day on a reasonably flat road.

Hey Zoomie, I had 16,000 on mine when I changed it. I realized that after I had it off that draining it was what was recommended. However, the filter was charcoal gray/ black. So I am not sure letting it in for 30,000 miles is the way to go. Then again, this is my first diesel so maybe thats isn't too abnormal? I figure for 25$-30$ and 10-20 minutes of my time it's worth changing it more often.

I changed mine out at 7500 miles. Thought it was early too, but I was doing the first oil change, so figured I'd knock it out. Very glad I did. Found the same dark grey/ black color on the filter media, although the inside of the filter was not as discolored. As to time and cost, 20 minutes, and I get the factory fuel/water separator off Amazon for around $26.00. Just have to keep your eyes open for price drops.
