No clue what that sound might be. Stop listening and run the darn thing.

If you are under 2,100 miles but had a regeneration at 4,100 you have discovered time travel.

Oil should be black, THIN and nasty. Leave it in there. It's normal.

Thanks for the report and welcome to the forums. The oil in a diesel engine will be black as tar about 10 minutes after you change it. That's normal. Keep the level up and change it according to the maintenance schedule and you'll have a long lasting happy engine.

Welcome to the forum.

Hope that our comments have put your mind at ease a bit. Not sure what those noises are. It's so hard to give advice on sounds because its impossible to actually hear what you are talking about. It makes things difficult. Take it to the dealer if you are really worried though.

That's interesting to me. I had a 2001 Duramax. 160,000 TROUBLED miles. Inarguably the worst motor I ever owned. Close to 20 grand and months of downtime awaiting repairs. Then the Allison came apart and I got a Cummins.

That Duramax had filthy oil from day one to the end. Guess they can be different .

Other than the oil looking "dirty" do you notice anything else fishy about your Diesel Ram?

My duramax has very clean oil at 5K mile changes, never black like my Ford Navistar diesel. Because of this, I'm disappointed to see black oil in my Ecodiesel. It can only be caused by one thing; blow by. That doesn't speak to reliability though, so hope that she lasts.

BTW, my Duramax is also a 2001. The problems that I have had were:
1. Blown head gasket - replaced all injectors at the same time & Stud kit, $8K.
2. Front end rebuild with heavy duty parts. $2.5K. That lasted another 20K miles. Front end leveling kit was the culprit. Shame on me!

Glad I found this thread: I hurried to change the oil on my ED when I got it (used - 2015 with 30K kms) because the oil looked thin but black. Dealer told me it had been changed about 4 months earlier. I did the change anyways since it was free, and when I checked right after, it was mostly clear but still had a little black. Checked it a few thousand kms later, and it is very black again. Truck running perfectly, but I was worried about longevity if there is something in the oil that shouldn't be. Glad to hear it is pretty normal!!
