Magnaflow!

39964 Views 42 Replies 22 Participants Last post by  crouch41
SO the Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel just received a Magnaflow option. Considering the popularity of exhausts with pickup owners I figure its only a matter of time (short time) before we see a magnaflow for the RAM EcoDiesel. Figure its just the pipe bends that need to be altered, the 3.0 EcoDiesel is identical..

Indeed, not worth a penny!

Problem is, any exhaust system for the new trucks is a complete waste of money, you gain NOTHING. No sound, no power, no mileage, nothing.

These trucks have what amounts to a cork up their tailpipe, the ONLY way you will see any gains is by doing a DPF delete. And those are illegal and have been basically put to bed by the EPA.

No DPF-back exhaust is worth the money it costs, might as well flush your cash down the toilet, it would be mildly more entertaining.

No time to waste

No time to waste :)
Being a licensed Diesel tech I genuinely hate the DEF/DPF/EGR systems. They are nothing but trouble and you can still run clean without the filters. I am not looking to roll coal but simply to prevent unpleasant surprises.
I broke this down into sections

Step 1 - Delete Muffler and Res prior to DEF-- Complete
Step 2 - Make custom DPF delete pipe -- In process
Step 3- Find tuner. working on it.

Just fabbed this up quickly.
Now before anyone jumps in and goes "it wont be louder you wasted your time and money. correct. I did. But this is just step one

you said prior to DEF... Thought that huge POS that you have missing was the muffler AFTER the DEF system. right before the rear axle
DEF chamber is still there. In front of that is the DPF filter.

You would think that straight pipe from what you see has to have some sound affect.

Oh man if you could eliminate all the emissions it would be wonderful. Big issue is the different computer operations that would have to be defeated or replaced. So far, even with the Cummins versions, nothing.

No the filter is still there. It will be removed shortly. Im working with a tuner as we speak. Nothing really crazy in terms of changing the ECU, just a new software algorithm that has to be adapted. We have done the deletes in big semis etc. Not sure yet if to hollow out the filter for "legal" purposes or to throw out the useless piece.

The big thing is the muffler ye.. Not even sure why you need it as a) makes 0 noise difference b)Unnecessary back pressure , unnecessary weight.

I think just like the hemi its just for assembly line purpose. The exhaust is 90% identical to the hemi from the DEF back.

keep us infoed alex, I wonder if the ECU would "learn"? I know with most of these modern motor bikes, especially sporty/street fighters, when changing the pipes a 5 minute (or about that) idle time for the bike and the ECU will recal to the new system...

I wish cars were that smart. It does the opposite. It goes hey someone messed with the system BAM de rate take me to the dealer please.

The old ways in some of the old trucks you could program it to a scenario that would be near impossible. It would never fall in that category to trigger engine faults. The new trucks are much more complicated.

You can cut off the DPF, and DEF and make a staight pipe but your engine will derate and send 100 of codes. On the Ram 1500 they actually prevented de rates ( I also tested this with running out of DEF) but The parameters are very close together. ... The tuner I work with is from Russia and one of the best out there. They have tuned many Hemis custom supercharge builds etc.

Although a bit different they Know what they are doing. They do my shops Volvo DD13and 16 deletes ;)
Any more going on here??? Very interesting info!

Problem is..... if someone genuinely gives good information, the ignorant may think that person is trying to be superior.
I would like to know what the U shaped pipe is for.
I'm guessing it's the 1 into 2 split. That would be the location the main exhaust goes to the two tail pipes. From the looks it's just prior to going over the rear axle.
Just the split. so the rear still loks stock with the dual exhaust.

As for the computer learning, You are right it does. however if the hardware can push more air into the engine and back out then the computer knows it needs to add fuel. This is where a tune really is important. With this truck, any mods to the exhaust will be sound only. im ok with that. I want some more sound. I dont want to mess with DPF until after warrenty is up and no issues happen with truck.
Nah. Everyone and anyone

Oh like you know it all about internet forums?

How'zat for a first post! :D I am kidding of course and you are right. What I believe ends up happening is the superior internet poster has seen the question so many times (including the first time HE asked all those questions) he becomes bored and just does not know how to help others. So he become a www bad ass.

I just joined after hearing good tings about the eco diesel's MPG's. Now, I find they are hard to get! :crying:

Russia?! Really? The same Ruskis that have been hacking our banking & commerce systems? The same Ruskis that don't build ANY vehicle even remotely close to American made? I know I sound like a [email protected], but I am quite shocked to hear this. When did Russia become diesel experts (over anyone in Europe)? If they do a great job, hey, why not? I'm still scratching my head on this one...please enlighten me.

As it turns out the turbo, catalytic and dpf are excellent mufflers. The Magnaflow will not be significantly louder than stock. Check YouTube for a demo video.

After installation of new exhaust, there is no difference in sound.
One major advantage is eliminating 50 pounds of crap. check

Thats disappointing. But look at it this way, you just increased your Haul limit by 50LBS
With Thanksgiving coming up 50LB advantage is going to be gone quickly, I bet ;p
with the two mufflers I removed, it should be somewhat lighter So I will get extra big turkey this year. lol
Best thread I've read so far, thanks I think you all just saved me some money!
