Is the Ram Diesel 1500 WORTH IT?

The question of whether the diesel will save you money in the long run is something I'm sure most will ask themselves

Ram is charging a $4,500 premium for the diesel engine over the gas v6.

Reading around you find a few articles mentioning that the gas savings over the V6 would take over two decades to pay for itself (at average of $3.62/gallon). With the assumption the diesel will get 4mpg better than the V6. (not sure how much miles a year that is based off of)

But to be fair the V6 makes a whopping 269lbs of torque and 305hp so the comparison isn't fair. (diesel ram makes a brutal 430ftlbs)

A comparison to the V8 is probably more suitable... The diesel is an upcharge of $2,850 over the Hemi V8 with optional 8 speed. And the payback for that should be within 5 years with a 7mpg improvement from the diesel.

I tried to contact the guy who wrote the article to figure out how many miles a year those statistics are based off of. (I would assume around 10-15k miles a year) We will see if i get an answer.

If it is true that you would make back your money in 5 years, that sounds pretty good for me. For a truck like this I would be thinking that I would hold onto it for somewhere between 5-8 years. While the gas savings are a reason to buy the Diesel Ram, its not the only reason and I think that should be taken into account here.
First time owners will be taking a hit on owning it, the costs of being an early adopter but down the road buying one of these used it will be great
So I asked and these numbers are indeed based off 12k miles a year.
when you look at payback don't forget to tack on the additional maintenance costs. Diesels always take a few more quarts of oil than a gasser, more collent as well. And dont forget about regular DEF/Urea topups...

Sure it will be a good deal used, but I am not going to wait to buy a used one. Even if it is not a money saver, I think that the Diesel Ram is well worth the money. Its pretty fuel efficient and is quite capable.

yeah for sure.
waiting is not going to be worth it now, might as well get it new.
but down the road, buying it used will be awesome
I guess the real mystery here is what sort of real world mileage will the diesel ram get.

Since we are basing the results off the "Estimated" mileage.
