Ram 1500's 3.0L V-6 EcoDiesel Engine Makes 10 Best Engine List for 3rd Year Running

As the end of the year approaches the internet is listing and awarding all manner things. Within the auto industry, one of the most prestigious awards is WardsAuto 10 Best Engines of the Year, and Ram is surely elated because the 3.0L V-6 EcoDiesel engine in the 2016 Ram 1500 has made the list for the third year running.

This year the EcoDiesel engine was chosen over the 5.0L V8 engine in Nissan's Titan XD, and the 2.8L I4 found in both the Chevy Colorado and the GMC Canyon. Editors evaluated the engines on power, torque, tech, fuel economy, relative competitiveness and noise, vibration and harshness characteristics. To be considered the engine must be all-new, significantly re-engineered or a winner from the previous year, and also available in the US market with a base price not exceeding $60,000.

So why did the EcoDiesel get chosen for the third year running? WardsAuto points to a number of reasons. The engine is quite popular, achieving a 20% take rate despite the $4,000 premium it has over the petrol V-6. However; the most substantial factor for the editors was the engine's fuel economy. Their testing observed a 24 mpg fuel economy with mixed daily driving, and the 28 mpg highway rating that is on the sticker puts it well ahead of segment rivals.

The awards will be presented on January 14th at the Detroit Auto Show.
