Ram Eco Motortrend Truck of Year

The Ram Eco has won Truck of the Year without having one production unit on the market and it doesn't look like we'll see one till possibly March or later according to the Ram CEO who initially had a market date of aug.-sept. 2013.On paper and from preproduction units this unit looks very good but their must be issues if we have not seen one production unit on the market.....is what we have been shown going to be what we get or are waiting for a variation.Ram already has a history with the hybrid contractor special which was announced well before production and may never get off the table.Ram you now have the glory now get the guts to tell the public the truth as to the reason for the hold back and give us a realistic production date and not possibilities.

Are they basing their decision off driving prototypes? I can't see how they can judge a vehicle if they didn't actually drive it. They must not be just judging the Ram 1500 Eco on paper.
thats weird, i don't get it, a product that isn't out already is won an award.
We've already seen multiple first drive reports so lets not get too offended here. Are you guys willing to believe that automakers regularly pay for not only reviews but GASP, awards as well...

Oh and keep this in mind as well, Mustang II, Chevy Vega, Chevy Citation were all past Motor Trend CoY winners and they were tragedies...
I think that the awards like this would be more legitimate if they had more transparency into how the cars are scored and what scores they are actually getting. Without that transparency than for all we know it could be based on who pays the most, or simply by popularity and hype. It's especially important given that some of the vehicles are not on sale to the general public yet.

x2

Them just showing us a list of cars that won under some category doesn't help but that along with all the details we need, does.

Still never seen anything like that, maybe in the future or maybe we can find it if we dig deep enough?

Well if you go search around Motor Trend has explained somewhere the nuts and bolts of their selection process, but even so its not illegal to lie. In light of that I do not buy based on awards or auto journo opinions.

Awards like this are not for dedicated shoppers like ourselves. They're for jay birds on the fence with little to no knowledge.

"Oh look EcoDiesel won MT ToY, Must be good, MT tells the truth!"

you can see how that would be effective.

That is so true. Awards like those don't have much of an effect on people that are really into this stuff, we're already armed with our own info or know where to find out what we want.
I think that these awards are just something nice that you can use in advertising either billboards or commercials. The average person who hears that something won an award will be more inclined to think its good.
I read a bunch of the preliminary hipe but did not get serious until I read several reports that followed on road testing. I have now paid the price and am giving it the only test I trust. (my hands on the steering wheel)
