Many vehicles on the market today could be getting near 30 mpg if there wasn't a ton of expensive pollution control junk such as EGRs etc on them. This junk cost a fortune, ruins the engine, and lowers the fuel economy a lot. A leading aftermarket company (GDE) that tunes the ECM warrants that their ECM will pass DEQ even in California.
The Europeans have already settled with Volks on their stupid stunt partly because the fix was so easy. It was said to only add about 10 percent more emissions before the fix, so basically it ran clean and fine before all this garbage hit the fan.
It's too bad the GDE is so expensive. Something like this should be half the price. Marketing 101, cut the price in half and sales will probably be 4 times higher.
