Ram Ecodiesel bright spot for last place FCA in fuel economy

FCA ranked dead last out of the 11 automakers that were included in the EPA's recent Fuel Economy Trends report. FCA vehicles averaged 20.9 mpg in the report. That is far lower than the industry average of 24.1 mpg for the US. It also represents only a small improvement of 0.8 mpg from 2012.

The one bright spot for FCA is the fact that it has the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, which is the most fuel-efficient pickup truck in its segment. It now accounts for 20 percent of Ram 1500 production.

FCA plans to sell more small vehicles, 8 and 9 speed transmissions, downsizes gasoline engines and diesel power plants to meet CAFE targets. Chrysler is currently working on a new line of sub-2.0 liter I-4 engines, called Hurricane, that should bring down average mpg as well. These engines should be available in 2016.

Kills me, small overworked engines are not the way to fuel economy excellence.

Think about it this way.

Large nail, small hammer or Small nail, Large hammer.

Which nail do you think is easier to sink? Exactly. Put larger motors in smaller, lighter cars and you have a similar situation.... Then again, small overworked engines are a gold mine for warranty/maintenance work...
